The innovative measurement instruments of BYK-Gardner are like “objective eyes” because they measure a surface as the human eye perceives it.
In appearance measurement devices, BYK-Gardner is the undisputed global market leader. The “wave-scan” and “structure space”, for example, are established worldwide automotive industry standards for measuring orange peel effect (waviness) and DOI (distinctness of image).
Basically, “structure space” is a special assessment system in which the measurement values correspond to the visual impression. It was developed by the “Orange Peel Working Group” under the chairmanship of BYK-Gardner and with the active participation of leading automotive manufacturers.
Another new and thoroughly innovative device in the color measurement sector is the “BYK-mac”. This portable device objectively measures the overall color impression of effect coatings.
The challenge here lies in that unlike uniform colors, effect coatings also alter their appearance with changes in viewing angle and lighting conditions. Depending on the type of effect pigments, for example, a sparkling effect can occur under sunlight. When the sky is cloudy, however, the visual impression changes completely – creating an effect often described as “graininess”. That graininess depends, in turn, on flake size and on flake orientation. Conventional color measurement systems are unable to adequately characterize these effects; the BYK-mac, however, reliably measures color change, sparkle and graininess.
